A dispatcher asks what is leaking, backing up or broken and what you have already shut off.
While the visit is booked you get plain instructions to limit damage, such as closing a valve.
The plumber diagnoses the problem on site and states the price before any work starts.
The work is finished, tested and explained, including what to watch for afterward.
Carteret sits where the Rahway River meets the Arthur Kill, and water shapes the calls we get. Hurricane Sandy in October 2012 pushed storm surge up to 10 feet deep across the borough's waterfront, and about 200 homes were seriously damaged. Low ground collects water, so basements, floor drains and sump pits are the first places that show trouble after a hard rain.
West Carteret lived under a state sewer ban for 25 years, lifted on June 26, 2009, because old pipes carried both sewage and stormwater and heavy rain overloaded the pump stations.
In October 2020 the borough closed a $4.8 million NJ Water Bank loan to rehabilitate the Roosevelt Avenue and Bergen Street pump stations. If drains back up on your whole street after a storm, report it to the borough as well as calling us, because the cause may be in the public system.
Middlesex Water Company replaced about 26,000 feet of water main in Carteret and part of Port Reading under its 2023 RENEW project, and any lead or galvanized steel service lines found were replaced with copper. After main work, loosened sediment can clog faucet aerators, so a sputtering faucet is often a five-minute faucet repair and not a bigger problem.
About 45 percent of Carteret homes are rented, so a lot of our calls start with a tenant who is unsure who pays. We give the tenant and the landlord the same plain account of what we found. For a clog that serves several apartments we start with the shared stack, using methods described on our drain cleaning page.
Every guide on this site is written to fit the National Standard Plumbing Code that New Jersey adopts through the Uniform Construction Code plumbing subcode, N.J.A.C. 5:23-3.15. Permit rules vary, so ask the Carteret Building, Construction and Land Use Department at 61 Cooke Avenue before any larger job.
Our office is at 835 Roosevelt Ave in Carteret. Port Reading is the closest neighbor, and Avenel, Woodbridge Township, Fords and Perth Amboy are all served from the same base.

Yes. The phone line at (718) 412-8453 is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, including nights, weekends and holidays. A dispatcher asks what is happening, tells you what to shut off while you wait and books the visit. Same-day appointments are available when the schedule allows.
We dispatch from our Carteret base to Port Reading, Avenel, Woodbridge Township, Fords and Perth Amboy. Each of those towns has its own page with the ZIP codes we cover and the local conditions that affect plumbing there.
You get a clear price before work starts, and nights, weekends and holidays are priced as emergency visits with the number given first. We do not quote a flat figure for a problem we have not seen, because a single sink and a main line behind a slab are very different jobs. Call (718) 412-8453 and we will explain how your job would be priced.
Shut off the water at the main valve if a pipe is leaking, switch off power near standing water only if you can reach the panel dry, and move belongings out of the wet area. For a backed-up drain, stop using every fixture. Tell the dispatcher what you shut off, so the right equipment is on the truck.
Leave the building right away, move at least 350 feet away, and call PSE&G at 1-800-880-PSEG (7734) or 911. Do not look for the source, use light switches or start a car near the leak. Call us only after you are safe, for any plumbing repair that follows.
Yes. Roughly 45 percent of Carteret homes are rented, so many calls come from tenants and landlords together. We explain what we found in plain terms to both, and for multi-unit houses we look at shared stacks and main lines first. See our commercial plumbing page for larger buildings.
Yes, we are licensed and insured. New Jersey licenses master plumbers through the State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers, and you can check any plumber's license through the Division of Consumer Affairs online lookup before you hire.
